short. rushed. unfinished. probably never-to-be-continued.
Akito is used to feeling like he's in an extended nightmare; it's really what every time Agito took over used to be like, before they found Ikki and the sky. So overall, he's approaching what he knows is his and Agito's impending destruction with a rather disturbing sense of calm.
When Akira calls Agito, Akito recognizes that note in his voice, knows what's coming. Agito doesn't believe him but Akito begs him to let him write Ikki a note anyway. His handwriting shakes in between the characters and his tears fall to the pages and smear the ink from the cheap pen he's using, but his words are resolute and he signs with a heart.
When he and Agito arrive to see Akira, the other boy has his AT on and a killer's smile on his face. Akito hates the way it makes his heart thrill; it's the only thing he will ever hold against Agito.
When Allen moves to support Kanda, the other boy violently pushes him away, snarling don't touch me in a way that is ludicrous in contrast with the paleness of his face and the way his legs are threatening to buckle beneath him. Kanda can see the flicker of annoyance beneath the concern on Allen's face and thinks to himself, typical.
When they get back to Lenalee's apartment he continues standing, stubborn in the face of the couch they have cleared for him because he doesn't need their pity. Ravi hovers, looks concerned (is actually concerned? Or is it a front? Kanda's vision is swimming and he can't tell) says, hey boss, thanks for going in there, Allen was seriously in trouble, it was looking really bad for a while, huh -- but you were great, I've never seen anyone get hit that much and not die, I coulda sworn that pirate must've shot you like eight times but I guess he missed.
Lenalee says nothing, just lays a gentle hand on the lines of the tattoo that have spread over his left shoulder, down his left arm, across his back. Her eyes are filled with an unspoken tragedy that Kanda isn't willing to deal with, and he jerks away from her hand and storms off to take a shower.
When Hibari finishes with Azula he dumps her outside the gates of the school, along with the rest of the people she'd brought there. He returns to the teacher's lounge and stretches out on the couch. Normally he's able to sleep through any kind of noise, but he finds himself unusually awake. When he closes his eyes he keeps remembering what Sawada Tsunayoshi's last fight had looked like.
Hibari doesn't put much stock in the value of the lives of weaklings, but lately he keeps finding himself thinking, what a waste.
Near had thought it wouldn't be as bad a second time, but the truth is that it's worse. When L dies there's a hollow sense of understanding - they poisoned his cake? are you fucking kidding me?!, Mello had said, and Near had silently agreed. When they take Mello out, Near knows he has to be on the defensive. He sends Namine away, apologizing without a hint of real regret, "It isn't safe anymore. I'll be relocating as well. It was nice to live with you for a while." She hovers, concerned, near the doorway. Near climbs into the bathtub with all of his clothes on and stares at his rubber ducky.
He moves into Mello's old apartment, even though he knows that's where they'll expect him to go. He curls up in an old, ugly coat with a ridiculous fur trim and breathes deeply, staring up at the security camera he knows is installed with the ugly look that first caught L's attention so many years ago.
He doesn't pursue them because there's no mystery to solve. These people, however much they might think of themselves, are not Kira. They're boring.
He stays one step ahead of each of the attacks, moves out of danger each time. At night he plays one-man scrabble, running his fingers over each piece of the alphabet.
Last man standing again, he tells Faith the last time he sees her before he disappears. When he laughs it's humorless.
